Operation Smile, an initiative started by Ghaziabad Police in 2014, is aimed at tracing, recovering and reconnecting missing children with their families. The project was implemented pan-India after Ghaziabad police managed to successfully rescue 227 children from the neighbouring areas. So far, over 10,000 children have been rescued under the project.

The project was recently re-implemented in the city with the help of the Government Railway Police. As a part of the initiative, officers were first trained on issues related to missing children, Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, Protection of Child Rights Act etc and sent on the field. GRP also enlisted the help of special teams comprising of female constables.

Within three days of its implementation, GRP managed to rescue 86 children who had ran away from home or misled into coming to the city.

The children were picked up from suburban railway stations and sent back to the families. Only a handful, whose home addresses could not be traced, are still under the GRP’s supervision.

Earlier in January, the GRP had successfully managed to rescue 1102 children from the city’s railway stations within a span of 24 days.
