A muslim religious authority has issued a fatwa against actor Jimmy Shergill for starring in political drama ‘Shorgul’.

The fatwa has been issued by Khamman Peer Baba Committee. According to the statement issued by the film’s makers,

“The fatwa states that a seasoned actor like Jimmy has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community.”

The movie, which is loosely based on the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, is already facing ban in several Uttar Pradesh cities due to it’s controversial subject. Although, its makers are planning on approaching UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav in a bid to lift the ban from cities like Muzaffarnagar, Kanpur, Lucknow and Ghaziabad.

Earlier, a Chandigarh court has summoned the makers of ‘Shorgul’, following a complaint by novelist Vijay Soudai. On Thursday, BJP leader Sangeet Som also demanded a ban on the film citing ‘incorrect portrayal of the riots’ in the film.

Featuring Jimmy Shergill and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles, ‘Shorgul’ is based on a relationship between a Hindu boy and Muslim girl that quickly escalates into a political issue. The film is set to release this Friday.
