Heavy rainfall did little to dampen the spirit of volunteers and members of a city-based NGO who successfully fed over 500 stray dogs on Saturday.

The Malad-based NGO, Animals Matter to Me (AMTM), had organized a drive to feed over 500 stray dogs on the Marwe stretch. The members had created an event on Facebook for the first time in a bid to reach out to a wider audience and attract more volunteers.

However, rains played a spoilsport Saturday morning and the members were worried that many prospective volunteers might not turn up for the feeding. But, to their surprise, over 50 volunteers turned up at the AMTM rehabilitation center at sharp 11 am.

According to a member, an average of 20 volunteers turn up during most activities. Saturday’s turnout was the highest he had ever seen while working with the NGO.

After the volunteers and members were accounted for, the group started preparing the food for the strays. The rice and meat porridge was then packed in aluminium foils and transported to nearby beaches with the help of their own ambulances and private vehicles.

The volunteers started feeding the dogs around 1 pm and managed to feed over 500 dogs by 7 pm.

A member also confirmed that the NGO plans on conducting more such activities during monsoon. And since the group got a positive response from Facebook, they intend to continue posting about their upcoming events on the social platform.
