Navi Mumbai police on Thursday arrested two men responsible for over a dozen chain snatching incidents across the city. The duo had stolen chains worth an estimated Rs 8.26 lakh.

Pos their arrest, the accused, Ankush Jadhav (37) and Yasin Shaikh (32), have confessed to 17 chain snatching cases.

After Navi Mumbai police received a tip-off confirming that Jadhav was going to Shilphata in Kalyan to meet with someone, they laid a trap and managed to nab him. Upon questioning, Jadhav revealed Shaikh’s whereabouts and was arrested soon after.

According to a crime branch official, the accused met each other while they were lodged in jail for separate robbery cases. Jadhav had been sent to jail for the theft of motor vehicles and Shaikh had been lodged for housebreaking and theft. The duo reunited after their release and have been working together since then.

The 17 cases registered against the accused are from Kopar Khairane, Vashi, APMC, Rabale, Nerul, Kharghar, Khandeshwar, Kamothe, Sanpada and Uran police stations.

While speaking to the media, Commissioner of police Hemant Nagrale said that the city police has managed to nab eight such gangs that would operate in their jurisdiction, resulting in the arrest of 26 culprits.

Police inspector, Ashok Rajput, further added that the timely arrest of the thieves has led to a significant drop in the number of such incidents in the city.
