In a tragic incident, a Mulund-based businessman lost his life after crashing his SUV into a divider near Chunabhatti on Eastern Express Highway during the wee hours of Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Lalit Jain, was accompanied by his wife Jigisha and two other couples. All six were residents of Avni Towers in Mulund and returning from a friend’s birthday party. The other couples were identified as Monica and Avinash Singh and Jinal and Kunal Shah.

Around 2:30 am, Lalit lost control of the Mahindra XUV 500 under Ahuja bridge, causing the car to crash into the divider. The speeding car eventually crossed over the other side before flipping over and coming to a halt.

“An onlooker told us that the car was being driven at a very high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle, forcing it cross over to the other lane. The incident happened near an uneven patch of road,” said an official from Chunabhatti police station.

Lalit suffered severe injuries to his head and was rushed to Sion Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries around 5 am. The other five passengers suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Chunabhatti police have filed a case of accidental death. The other passengers will be interviewed before filing any other charges.

Despite having a lower density of cars than Delhi, Mumbai witnesses the maximum number of accidents in the country, with near 23,500 accidents reported in 2015 alone. In a similar incident last week, an Innova crashed into a taxi on the Eastern Freeway resulting in the death of three individuals.
