On Tuesday, 15 MBBS students were expelled from medical colleges across Mumbai, following the exposure of the medical admission scam by a retired Mantralaya employee.

The 17 accused, including two students from Kolhapur medical colleges, were found guilty of submitting fake caste certificate to secure admission under the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) quota.

The scam came to light after retired Mantralaya staffer, Sadanand Gavit, tipped off the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) about students using fake caste certificates to secure admissions in colleges. Since a majority of them claimed to hail from Nandurbar, a cross-verification with the district authorities revealed that their certificates were indeed bogus.

Following the incident, the DMER, who is responsible for overseeing admissions in all non-private medical colleges in the state, has asked to verify the details of all students who have secured admission under the SC/ST quota. Once the verification is complete, there is a possibility of more fake certificates coming to the forefront, resulting in the expulsion of more students.

The expelled students from Mumbai-based state and civic hospitals include:

# Nine students from Grant Medical College of JJ Hospital – Aayesha Reshamwala, Mohammad Reshamwala, Nuamana Mansuri, Mohammed Israrul Qadari, Awais Khan, Areeba Khan, Karan Purohit, Maria Shaikh and Shaikh Tayabe Yunus

# Two students from Tilak Medical College of Sion Hospital – Faiz Nandolia and Yash Parekh.

# Three from medical college of Nair Hospital – Vidhi Shrivastva, Devaki Gandhi and Ehtesham Khan.

# One student from medical college of RN Cooper Hospital – Seeral Salim Patel

The students who were expelled from Kolhapur colleges were identified as Zeenat Khan and Rajshri.

Following their dismissal from the college, the students are likely to get arrested within the next few days.

Unfortunately, while the guilty will still be punished for their actions, genuine students would lose out as the seats will remain vacant in colleges during the academic year.
