Mumbai Police on Friday launched the emergency response mobile surveillance control and command centre vehicle, which is capable of sending live feed to the police control room remotely via satellite in case of emergency or disaster.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar launched the mobile command centre.

“If any law and order situation emerges or any kind of disaster happens, police will send this mobile command centre to the spot. CCTV cameras, which are installed on the roof of vehicle, will catch the live video from the spot and it will be sent to the command centre in Mumbai Police’s main control room through satellite,” a police officer said.

Senior officers in the police control room will be able to keep a close watch on the situation and decisions will be taken accordingly. At the same time, they will be able to give instructions to the officers who are on the spot, said the officer.

“This mobile vehicle was procured by a private company as a part of police modernisation exercise. This vehicle will help in maintaining law and order situation as well as in disaster control,” police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe told PTI.

While the city now has over 6,000 CCTV cameras watching over busy streets and junctions, officials say that the command centre will help where no cameras are installed.

In addition to the five roof mounted cameras, one of which is capable of 360 degree surveillance, the van also has four cushioned seats and a large LED screen.
