Four people died, and six others were injured, in a major accident involving two trailers, a tempo and a private vehicle on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place around 8:15 am near the Khalapur toll plaza in Raigad district, around 40 kms ahead of Panvel. The victims, travelling in separate vehicles, were all enroute Mumbai.

According to an official with Khopoli police station, the accident occurred after a trailer rammed into another at high speed.

The impact of the collision caused both trailers, one of which was carrying iron rods, to completely veer of their lane.

Upon seeing the accident, the tempo driver who was travelling behind the trailers swerved to the extreme left in a bid to avoid hitting them.

The tempo driver, however, lost control and ended up toppling the vehicle on the road. The driver of a private vehicle, who also tried to avoid hitting the trailers, ended up ramming into one of them.

Owing to the mishap, the driver of one of the trailers and three people travelling in the car sustained severe injuries.

All four succumbed to their injuries earlier today and their bodies have been sent to a government hospital for conducting postmortem. Details about the identities of the deceased are awaited.

At least six others, including the other trailer driver and tempo driver, were rushed MGM hospital in Kamothe by locals and are still undergoing treatment.

The wreckage blocked most of the Mumbai-bound lane of the expressway, due to which traffic on the route has come to a halt. Efforts to clear the road are currently underway.

In a similar incident, an SUV driver had died on the spot following an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Monday.
