At least six kids were injured and over a dozen hutments gutted in a major fire that broke out at the slums located between the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Masjid railway stations on Monday evening.

The incident took place at the LLC Compound in the Dana Bandar area of South Mumbai at around 6:15 pm. It was escalated to a Level III fire by 6:22 pm.

12 fire tenders and six water tankers were rushed to the spot to douse the fire.

“12 fire brigades, six water tankers and ambulances have been rushed to the spot. The area is extremely congested and it is difficult to enter the spot. Policemen have been deployed at the spot for crowd handling,” said Chief Fire Officer, P Rahangdale.

According to a fire official on the spot, the fire was confined to 15 to 20 hutments. Fire fighting is still underway and the cause of fire is not yet known.

Local police, meanwhile, is assisting with crowd control and traffic management. More reinforcements are on the way.

At least six kids, aged between six and 13 years, were injured and rushed to JJ hospital for treatment. One of them, identified as Ramjan Shaikh (13) has suffered 70 percent burns is said to be in a critical condition.

The other injured were identified as – Salman Khan (12), Jirro (12), Rehman Shaikh (10), Vinayak (6), Sameer (7). The remaining kids have sustained between 10 to 20 percent burns.

The fire also affected the suburban services on the Central line. Fast services to and from both CST and Masjid Bunder came to a halt.

The power supply to tracks 7 and 8, used by fast trains going towards and from CST, has been switched off, confirmed Central Railway’s chief spokesperson Narendra Patil. All trains were subsequently diverted to the slow line.

Owing to the peak hour rush, commuters travelling on the route saw massive delays. The services have resumed as of writing this report.

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST) has also arranged additional services to cater to the stranded commuters.
