A massive fire broke out in the slums in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Thursday evening.

The blaze started around 6 pm in a scrapyard located inside the slums in Mandala area of Mankhurd Gaon, Mankhurd.

Fire department was quickly alerted about the mishap, following which at least 12 fire engines and water tankers were rushed to the spot.

Local police and ambulance also arrived at the scene, although all emergency vehicles were delayed due to the peak hour traffic.

According to preliminary information, the fire started in a warehouse due to a cylinder blast. However, a confirmation from the fire department is awaited.

The blaze has reached a height of almost 20 feet and is visible from a 5km radius. Fire fighting is currently underway.

Although some shanties are believed to have been completely gutted in the fire, no casualties have been reported till now.

The traffic on the adjoining Ghatkopar-Mankhurd link road has also been severely impacted as hundreds of affected locals have taken to the roads, many of whom carrying their belongings.

Further details are awaited.

Update (8:50 pm): Reliance Energy has switched off the power supply in the area as a safety precaution. The power will be restored after a go ahead from the fire department.

Update (9:30 pm): 17 fire engines and 8 water tankers are currently on the spot, and 2 people have reportedly sustained minor injuries. The cause of fire is still not known.

Update (9:50 pm): The market houses small factories and godowns, some of whom store chemicals that caused the blaze to escalate.

Udpate (10 pm): The blaze has been brought under control. The two injured persons were identified as Raju Yadav and Aju Pal, both of whom sustained around 15 percent burns and are currently being treated. BMC officials are expected to visit the area next week to ascertain the course of action for removing the illegal shanties, which an official today classified as a ‘serious fire hazard’.
