Two days after a senior citizen was injured in Dahisar’s skywalk collapse, a bus stop collapsed on commuters in Mumbai’s Dadar area on Wednesday morning, injuring a school girl among others.

The incident took place around 11 am today at the Plaza Bus Stop located at the end of Tilak Bridge near Plaza Theatre in Dadar East. The area, which has a market in the vicinity, is extremely crowded during peak hours.

According to an onlooker, many commuters were patiently waiting for the bus’ arrival when the structure collapsed on them.

At least five people, including a school girl, were reportedly injured in the mishap. The girl, who sustained major injuries, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. The condition of injured commuters is presently not known.

Although a confirmation is awaited, preliminary information suggests that the footpath’s removal for renovation work likely loosened the bus stop’s footing, resulting in the collapse.

While the stop is managed by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the footpath falls under the purview of the civic body.

Bus service on the route has not been affected and further details regarding the incident are awaited.

In a similar incident, a senior citizen was injured after a portion of the skywalk near Dahisar West station collapsed on him on Tuesday.

Although the 65-year-old is recovering, the incident has raised serious questions about the state of civic amenities in Mumbai.

Update:

The injured school girl has been identified as Sakshi Pratap. The 15-year-old was initially taken to KEM hospital and later shifted to Hinduja hospital, where she is still receiving treatment.

Officials from Shivaji Nagar Police station will be questioning the contractor to ascertain if it was a case of negligence and take further action.
