After a chilly start to the year, mercury levels were on the rise since the last two weeks until Tuesday morning, when the city recorded the lowest minimum temperature for the month of February since 2013.

In the first half of January, Mumbai had witnessed a long spell of cold with temperatures falling as low as 11.9 degrees Celsius, almost 5 degrees below normal. The spell ended after the first fortnight, as temperatures slowly rose to the reach average levels.

On Tuesday morning (February 7), however, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal and the lowest since 2013.

Before this, the lowest minimum temperature had fallen to 13.2 degrees Celsius in February 2013. In comparison, it had dropped to 14.3 degree Celsius on February 4 last year.

The all time lowest minimum temperature was recorded on February 8, 2008, when mercury levels had dropped to a chilly 8.9 degree Celsius.

According to KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General (West) of the IMD, the fall in temperature can be attributed to the cold winds blowing from Gujarat and Saurashtra, where temperatures have fallen below the 10 degree Celsius mark.

The IMD has forecast that similar conditions will prevail till the end of the week, although the minimum temperature is expected to climb to approximately 16 degrees Celsius.
