Commute on the world’s most crowded rail network is about to get a tad more manageable as railway authorities are planning to introduce 75 more services for Mumbai’s commuters.

The services, which will be introduced across both Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR), will be launched in the new timetable which is expected to be applicable from October this year.

According to officials, 40 new services will come up on WR while 35 will be introduced on CR, which includes the main line, harbour line and trans-harbour line. The additional services will lead to less crowding during peak hours.

The decision to introduce new services was announced during a review meeting chaired by Railway Board Member (Traffic) Mohamed Jamshed in Mumbai yesterday.

Following the meet, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu also tweeted about the development. “Mem Traffic review.40 new services on #Mumbai western¢ral each from 2nd October with new time table MRVC works reviewed by MT too,” he wrote.

The services will reportedly start from stations like Dadar, Bandra and Kurla, which have newer residential and commercial hubs, instead of stations like Churchgate and CST, which have reached their saturation point.

Apart from introducing new services, officials from both CR and WR have been instructed to improve the frequency of trains and curb delays.

Jamshed also asked the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to expedite work on the Mumbai Urban Transport Project.

As of today, both CR and WR run close to 3,000 services everyday for the city’s 75 lakh plus daily commuters.
