A senior Jet Airways employee was caught while trying to smuggle 4 kg gold worth around Rs 1.2 crore at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Tuesday.

The staffer, identified as Nadeem Ansari (29), worked as a senior service supervisor with Jet Airways.

Ansari was reportedly intercepted by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Tuesday night while leaving the airport with small pouches containing 4 kg gold.

The gold was handed over to Ansari by a flyer who had arrived in the city from Dubai. The flyer had offered Rs 75,000 for smuggling the consignment out of the airport.

The flyer, whose identity has not been revealed, had travelled via business class and left the gold in the bus ferrying passengers from the airline to the terminal. Ansari collected the gold from the back seat of the bus.

Although the passenger managed to leave the airport before the incident came to light, DRI officials were able to apprehend Ansari before he could exit. According to officials, he was not on active duty and had no reason to be near the bus.

Following the incident, Jet Airways suspended Ansari and launched an enquiry to decide the further course of action.

“We have a strict employee code of conduct and all airline staff are required to comply with it,” a Jet spokesperson was quoted saying.

Ansari had reportedly been working for the airline for the past six years and was a part of the smuggling racket since the last few months. He would earn well over a lakh each week by smuggling multiple such consignments.
