Mumbai marred with waterlogging, delays and mishaps after heavy rainfall

Mumbaikars had to face major delays during their morning commute today after various parts of the city received moderate to heavy rainfall between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
According to the weather department, Colaba Observatory recorded 67 mm of rain, while Santacruz Observatory received 39 mm in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. The rains and thundershowers are expected to continue over the next 24 hours.
The civic body’s disaster management team is keeping a tab on the situation, confirmed BMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner (General Administration) Sudhir Naik.
“Civic body’s preparatory forces are in place to tackle any eventualities. There has been no significant water-logging and our machinery is keeping a close eye on the developments,” he told PTI.
Affected areas:
Amid the heavy downpour, waterlogging has been reported in low-lying areas around Kurla, Sion, Matunga, Dadar, Hindmata, Mahim, Ghatkopar, Andheri, JVLR and Navi Mumbai. At least ten locations have witnessed flooding according to BMC.

The traffic movement in the above areas, including the Western and Eastern Express Highways, has been affected since 8 am. To ease traffic, BEST buses have also been diverted from road number 24 in Sion and Vidyavihar.
Train delays:
Trains plying on both Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) witnessed delays in the morning. While the average delay for WR trains was around 10-15 minutes, CR services were delayed by around 20-30 minutes.

CR services were affected due to a technical glitch at Kurla station. Meanwhile, a point failure between Mahim and Bandra stations led to delays on the harbour line. The tracks at Kurla, Thane and Kalwa were also partly submerged under water.

Mishaps:
Tuesday morning was also marred with mishaps, with multiple tree fall incidents and road accidents reported in the city.
Civic officials confirmed that the rain spells uprooted trees at 22 places across the city, although no human casualty was reported.

Meanwhile, road accidents were reported on the Western Express highway – near Andheri, Kandivali and Bandra East – and Ghatkopar. Two separate incidents of vehicles catching fire near Mahim and JVLR, Powai were also reported.

The mishaps, along with the ongoing rainfall, affected the traffic movement and led to traffic snarls at various spots in the city.
High tide:
Weather officials have warned of a 4.82 metre high tide around 2.30 pm today. The high tide, coupled with heavy showers, could cause flash floods in low-lying areas in the city.
As a result, citizens have been cautioned to stay away from the sea.
Forecast:
The India meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains at isolated places in the next 24 hours.
According to IMD, Mumbai and Konkan regions of Maharashtra experienced heavy showers in the past 24 hours as South West monsoon intensified in the state.
