Railway officials have arrested a 25-year-old who, in a bid to take revenge from train bullies, threw chilli powder on at least seven commuters at Shahad station near Kalyan on Tuesday morning.

Despite the rising number of complaints, railway authorities have had very little success in tackling rogue commuters who often form groups and bully other passengers to stop them from boarding or seating on the train.

As a result, when all else fails, those on the receiving end sometimes take matters in their own hands. Sohrab Idrisi is allegedly one such victim.

On Tuesday, the 25-year-old flung chilli powder on the window of second general coach as the CST local (TL-12 UP) was departing from platform 2 of Shahad station at 7:35 am.

While Idrisi managed to flee the spot after the incident, at least seven passengers suffered severe itching in their eyes and body after coming in contact with the chilli powder.

The passengers were subsequently taken to Rukmanibai Hospital in Kalyan. After receiving first-aid, they were referred to Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli. The group received medical treatment and was discharged from the hospital after a few hours.

Following the incident, one of the victims, Deepak Dhakubala Gavade, filed a complaint with Government Railway Police at Titwala.

During investigation, the RPF Kasara team circulated the CCTV footage of the incident to vendors outside Shahad station, when one of them identified Idrisi. On getting his address, the RPF went to his house in the evening and apprehended him.

In custody, Idrisi confessed to the act and told cops that he had thrown the chilli powder to take revenge from commuters who had tried to bully him over seats earlier.

Incidentally, one of the victims told a leading daily that none of them had fought with Idrisi.

The GRP officials have booked Idrisi, an AC mechanic, under sections 323, 324 of the IPC and 150 (a) and (e) of the Railway Act. He could face up to three years in jail.
