In a freak incident, a massive portion of Zig Zag road in Mumbai’s Bandra area caved in on Friday night as heavy rains continued to lash the city’s western suburbs.

The incident took place at Zig Zag Road, which connects Dr Ambedkar Road and Nargis Dutt Road in Pali Hill, Bandra (West).

According to preliminary information, the portion of the road caved in late night amid heavy downpour. However, no one had been reported injured as of writing this.

While an official update from the civic body is awaited, the incident is believed to have taken place after heavy winds caused multiple trees, located at the edge of the portion that collapsed, to get uprooted. The falling trees inadvertently caused the road to cave in.

Officials from the BMC’s disaster management cell and fire department reached the spot early morning on Saturday to assess the situation. The officials then cordoned the area off by placing barricades.

Meanwhile, at least three vehicles – a Maruti Swift, Toyota Corolla and Maruti Ertiga – parked alongside the adjacent compound wall were damaged after the trees and the road debris fell on them. The civic officials deployed a digger to remove the debris.

In addition, some of the trees also fell on the roofs of shops located inside the compound. While the debris could be seen on the roof of Cambay Tiger, Food Spot and Beauty Hub, it is not certain to what extent they were structurally damaged.

Corporators Ashish Shelar and Swapna Mhatre also visited the spot earlier to take stock of the situation.

By evening, most of the trees had been cut into pieces and moved out along with other rubble.

A civic official, while speaking with Local Press Co, confirmed that the road will be reconstructed only after a thorough inspection of the area.

The civic body received over a dozen tree fall complaints in the last 24 hours due to heavy rains.

A day prior, a 57-year-old yoga instructor also lost her life after a coconut tree, deemed healthy by the BMC, fell on her during her morning walk in Chembur.
