Traffic movement on the busy Western Express Highway (WEH) was slightly affected on Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle caught fire on Andheri flyover.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place around noon today when a white coloured Maruti Suzuki Dzire got engulfed in flames mid-journey.

The vehicle, travelling southbound towards Bandra, caught fire as it reached the spot right below the Mumbai Metro bridge leading to Andheri Metro station.

Although the exact cause of fire is not known at the moment, one onlooker claimed that it was a result of a leakage in the vehicle’s CNG tank. However, the same could not be verified independently.

The driver managed to escape the vehicle unhurt as passersby alerted traffic police about the incident. Within minutes, both traffic police and fire department arrived on the spot.

While traffic officials continued to direct the flow of traffic, the fire department put out the flames. The blaze was brought under control by 12:30 pm.

The vehicle will be towed away after it has cooled off. Meanwhile, traffic movement on the flyover has normalised.
