A 25-year-old man from Virar was arrested earlier this week for posting a vulgar and abusive comment on a woman’s Facebook page.

Hanson Joseph Lobo, an executive with a share-trading firm, was arrested from his house in Virar and produced before a court, which remanded him in police custody till August 10.

Senior police inspector Deepak Phatangare of Malvani police station said that Lobo had posted objectionable comments on the complainant’s Facebook page earlier too.

The 28-year-old woman, who works as a manager at a multinational bank, recently approached the police after a person unknown to her posted a vulgar and abusive comment on her profile picture.

Police traced the comment to Lobo from the IP address of the computer where it had originated, the inspector said, adding that he was not friends with the woman nor did he know her socially.

In custody, he confessed that he had posted the comment with the intention of harassing the woman.

Lobo has been booked under section 354(A) (sexual harassment) and 354 (D) (stalking) of IPC, apart from section 67 of the Information Technology Act (publishing obscene material in electronic form).

The police are now trying to ascertain if he had harassed anyone other than the complainant. An investigation into the matter is underway.
