Two police constables were among the four persons arrested in connection with the robbery of diamonds worth around Rs 24 lakh from a jewellery shop in Borivali.

According to officials, a middleman identified as Raj set up a deal for Jayesh Zaveri, the jeweller, to buy diamonds from a Gujarat-based businessman.

The businessman went to the jeweller’s shop in Borivali on Wednesday evening where Raj and the latter’s two friends, including a woman, were already present.

Around 4:30 pm, as soon as Raj initiated the deal, two policemen arrived there and told them that they had information about an illegal transaction being done.

The constables subsequently slapped Zaveri, seized the diamonds and took him and Raj along in their police van.

Later, the policemen dropped the jeweller and Raj midway and asked them to reach Crawford market police station in the evening with proper documents of the diamonds for verification.

They even gave them a bogus contact number and instructed the duo to bring the businessman along with them.

Sensing something amiss, the jeweller in the meantime informed about the matter to the Borivali police and lodged a case. The police identified the two constables from the CCTV footage of the jewellery shop and arrested them yesterday.

The constables, Chandrakant Gheware and Santosh Gawas, are a part of Mumbai Police’s arms division. After being caught, the constables reportedly offered to returned the diamonds, but they were arrested.

Besides the constables, the police also nabbed two of Raj’s friends in connection with the heist. However Raj, who is believed to be the mastermind, is still absconding.

The accused have been booked under IPC section 395 (punishment for dacoity) and an investigation into the case is currently underway.
