HC judge offers to pay school fees of a housemaid's son during hearing

Bombay High Court

A serving judge of the Bombay High Court, on Friday, offered to pay fees for the admission of a petitioner’s kid who was denied admission to a private school as his parent could not afford to pay the entire amount.

Justice VM Kanade was hearing a plea filed by a single mother, Rita Kanojia, who works as a house help to make ends meet.

Kanojia, in her plea, said that she has been working as a house help since 2014 after her husband succumbed to Cancer. She has two daughters, studying in Class III and V respectively, of the Lokmanya Tilak School in Chembur.

When Kanojia approached the same school for the admission of her 4-year-old son in junior kindergarten (Jr Kg), the school authorities asked her to deposit Rs 30,000 for finalizing the admission.

She somehow managed to deposit Rs 19,500 and asked the school to give her additional time to arrange the balance amount as her financial condition wasn’t sound. However, the school refused to cooperate.

After hearing the entire case, Justice Kanade rebuked the school for its apathy and observed that the school must have considered Kanojia’s plight. Later, out of generosity, the judge offered to pay the remaining amount himself to secure the kid’s admission.

But, the school authorities changed their stance and told court that the kid would be granted admission and can join the school from Monday.
