Incessant rainfall over the Konkan region forced authorities to shut the Mumbai-Goa highway on Thursday night. The traffic has been diverted via Kolhapur towards Mumbai from 8.30 pm.

National Highway police control confirmed that the road from Mumbai towards Chiplun is working, while vehicles can not advance further due to heavy flooding on Jagbudi river.

The vehicles are diverted from Chiplun towards NH 4 to reach Kolhapur. The vehicular movement came at a halt at 8.30 pm tonight after the downpour intensified. It lead to traffic congestion at some points where small bridges were submerged.

Meanwhile, a landslide alert has also been issued for Kashedi and Bhoste Ghats in Ratnagiri district on the Mumbai-Goa highway.

Motorists travelling on Friday morning from Mumbai to Lonavala or Pune are also expected to face major traffic snarls.

The transport authorities are treading on the side of caution after a British era bridge constructed over Savitri river on the Mumbai-Goa highway collapsed on August 2, following which two State Transport buses and some other private vehicles fell into the river.

Update (11:30 am, Sep 23): Landslide near Parshuram Ghat on Mumbai-Goa highway has disrupts all vehicular movements. Traffic diverted from Chiplun to Karad route.
