Ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2017, the municipal body on Monday made the new civic boundaries public and announced the reservations for backward categories and women.

Corporators, especially those who are open to cutting across party lines, were eagerly waiting for the announcement.

The civic body had earlier announced that for the 2017 elections, all 227 Corporator wards will have a population of 54,000. As a result, seven wards have been reduced from the island city. In their place, five and two wards have been increased in the Western and Eastern suburbs respectively.

Owing to the extensions and reductions, the boundaries of over 80 percent of Corporator wards have been changed. Political parties will have to put in extra work and devise strategy in keeping with the newer boundaries.

According to one report, Corporators had stopped spending on certain areas of their ward because they weren’t sure if the area would still fall under their ward post revision.

Now that the boundaries are clearly marked, Corporators are likely to shift to a more ‘progressive stance’ once again.

The total seats reserved for Scheduled Caste category have been increased from 11 to 15 and two have been reserved for Scheduled Tribe.

Of the 227 wards, fifty percent or 114 wards have been reserved for women.

The political parties that will be vying for maximum seats are Shiv Sena (SS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Samajwadi Party (SP).
