In the wake of the staunch opposition from rival political parties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged Indians to express their views about the government’s decision to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

The decision to demonetize high value currency was announced on November 8 and implemented the day after.

Following the demonetization, the opposition has presented a unified front and called for a rollback of the decision citing the ‘suffering of the poor’.

However, BJP-led government has maintained that the move has been welcomed by a majority of citizens, who understand how the nation will benefit from it in the long run.

The decision and it’s subsequent opposition has also affected the functioning of both houses, which have been adjourned repeatedly over protests.

In a bid to end the speculation surrounding the decision and get a pulse of what the general public is feeling, PM Modi asked citizens to take a short survey on the official Narendra Modi app.

“I want your first-hand view on the decision taken regarding currency notes. Take part in the survey on the NM App,” he said in a tweet.

The survey poses questions pertaining to general feedback about the decision, take on black money, opinion on fighting black money, etc and uses a simple rating system, allowing users to easily convey their level of agreement.

In the recent days, many who had supported the decision initially have also spoken out against it owing to the cash-crunch in the market, loss in business and long queues at banks/ATMs.

The government has tried to respond to greiviences by modifying limits, making certain exemptions and allowing essential utility providers to accept old currency till November 24.

Just yesterday, the government also announced that it was using IAF planes and helicopters to reduce the time taken to move cash in the country.
