Lakhs of students, set to appear for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams next year, were relieved after the Maharashtra state board decided to alter the earlier timetable and introduce breaks between three crucial exams.

An estimated 17 lakh students will appear for the exam, which begins on March 7, 2017.

In the older time table, issued by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on october 29, the Science II, History & Civics and Geography & Economics papers were scheduled to take place between March 20 to 22.

However, during the 15 day feedback period, teachers, students and members of the legislative council raised concerns over the lack of breaks and demanded that the timetable be altered to accommodate at least a day’s gap for students to prepare for the subject.

The timetable was modified on Thursday and breaks were added before each of these three papers.

“Considering the feedback, we decided to change the timetable. HSC timetable remains unchanged,” said Krishnakumar Patil, secretary of the state board.

According to the timetable, the Science II paper will be held on March 20, History & Civics on March 22 and Geography & Economics will be held on March 25.

Moreover, since the Geography & Economics paper has moved from March 22 to March 25, the subsequent papers have also been pushed ahead. As a result, the exam will now conclude on April 1 instead of March 29.

The decision to introduce breaks before the exams has been welcomed by both teachers and students.

“Having three consecutive papers would have taken a toll considering the fact that we had to study a total of five subjects during those days. A holiday after each paper will give us adequate time to refresh our minds and revise the portion,” said Prashant Sule, a class 10 student from I.E.S school.

The board was reportedly unable to keep a gap between the papers in the previous timetable owing to the impending elections.
