A 34-year-old drunk driver panicked after spotting a police nakabandi at Marine Drive during the wee hours of Thursday and rammed his Mercedes into the barricades, injuring an on duty police constable.

According to a Mirror report, Bhavish Shah, a resident of South Mumbai, was returning from a party in Kemps Corner around 2 am when he came across the nakabandi on his way to Marine Drive.

Shah, who was driving in an inebriated state, panicked after spotting cops and ended up ramming his white-colored Mercedes C-Class into the barricade at over 80 kmph.

The impact of the crash pushed the barricade towards constable Mahesh Jadhav, who was standing right behind it. Two other cops who were in the vicinity managed to get out of the way. Shah also rammed into a police vehicle.

Jadhav, who reportedly suffered fractures in both legs, was subsequently rushed to GT Hospital. His condition is stable.

Following the incident, Shah tried to flee from the spot, but police chased him and managed to nab him near Wankhede Stadium.

Shah has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servants from discharging duties), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (breach of peach), and 506 (criminal intimidation), along with various sections of the Motor Vehicle Act for drunk driving.

Cops are also waiting for his medical reports to ascertain the amount of alcohol he had consumed.

During questioning, Shah told cops that he panicked as he feared getting arrested for drunk driving. He was worried about losing his job and hampering his family’s reputation. He works as a business analyst with a private firm.

He was granted bail at 8 pm on Thursday.
