In a bid to curb the number of accidents on the Palm Beach road, the Navi Mumbai traffic police has started installing CCTV cameras on the stretch.

The initiative is on the lines of the one at Bandra-Worli sealink, where over 80 cameras have been installed to dissuade motorists from speeding. Back in December, traffic police even started sending e-challans to motorists caught speeding on the sealink.

According to an Indian Express report, three CCTV cameras will be installed at pivotal places and a special team has been formed to monitor them.

“So far, we have installed one and two more will be installed soon. Drivers who drive rashly and perform stunts on the road will be recorded on video. After identifying them, we will call them and their parents to our office for counselling. Our intention is to create awareness and desist people from such actions,” Nitin Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Division, was quoted saying.

Pawar added that motorists who continue to break the law will be booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Two bikers have already been caught with the help of the CCTV camera installed on February 25.

Officials will also write to the regional transport offices about repeat offenders to get their licenses are suspended or cancelled.

The Palm Beach Road is a six-lane ten kilometre long road that connects Vashi and Belapur through Sanpada, Nerul, running parallel to the Mumbai Harbour.

Although the existing speed limit on the stretch is 60 km, motorists often breach that limit, clocking speeds of well over 120 kmph thanks to the vast empty stretches and smooth roads. The speeding, inadvertently, leads to more accidents and fatalities.

The Palm Beach road reportedly witnesses over 100 accidents with fatalities each year.
