At least 12 bikes and two cars were gutted in a massive fire at Mumbai’s Bhandup area during the wee hours of Monday, following which police launched a probe to trace the unidentified person who was responsible for starting the blaze.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place near a chawl located at Shri Ram Pada in Bhandup. The chawl’s residents, who were sleeping at the time, were woken up by the thick smoke that engulfed the area.

One of the residents alerted the fire department after spotting the engulfed vehicles, post which officials arrived at the spot and doused the fire.

The blaze was brought under control in minutes with the help of one fire engine and one water tanker.

A total of 12 bikes and two cars parked on the adjoining road were completely gutted in the fire, confirmed an official with the fire department. However, no casualties were reported due to the incident.

Since none of the locals spotted the person responsible for starting the blaze, Bhandup police registered a case against the unidentified person.

The miscreant was booked under sections 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police have already launched a probe to identify and nab the accused, although the lack of CCTVs in the area has made it difficult to trace the person responsible.

Meanwhile, cops have started questioning locals to identify any possible suspects.
