In a shocking incident, a Mumbai police constable has been booked for allegedly trying to run his car over a businessman in Thane following a financial dispute.

According to a release by Thane city police, Ramesh Awate, attached to the crime branch of Mumbai police, had tried to knock down Atul Pethe on April 21.

Pethe, who owns an ice-cream shop, was friends with the constable. However, a dispute cropped up between them over some financial matter, the release said.

Sources claim that Awate had borrowed Rs 3 lakh from Pethe’s mother, but was refusing to pay it back despite repeated requests. Later, in a bid to recover the amount, Pethe lodged a police complaint against Awate, which made him furious.

“On April 21, Awate came to Pethe’s shop in Naupada area and started hurling abuses at him. Thereafter, the accused drove his vehicle in a negligent manner to harm the victim. Pethe clung to the vehicle and was dragged for some distance,” the release said.

The incident, which took place near Prashant Corner ice-cream shop in Thane, was also caught on CCTV. In the video, Pethe can been seen being being dragged by a Toyota Innova, allegedly being driven by Awate.

Passersby later raised an alarm and came to Pethe’s rescue, forcing Awate to reverse his car and flee the spot. The victim sustained minor injuries.

A complaint was registered against the constable on April 22, following which he was booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).

Awate was yet to be arrested and efforts were on to nab him, police said.

The constable had also been booked for extortion in 2010 after he demanded Rs 15 lakh from Munaf Kasmani.
