The civic body’s tall claims about monsoon preparedness went for a toss on Friday morning as several areas in Mumbai witnessed water logging after receiving light to medium showers late Thursday night.

Ahead of every monsoon, the civic body claims it has done everything in its power to get the city ready for the rains. And with the exact same consistency, Mumbaikars lose all faith when the first showers inadvertently manage to bring the city to a grinding halt.

The annual ritual would have continued like clockwork this year too after BMC said that it had completed over 90 percent desilting work in the city. Instead, commuters fell victim to water logging before monsoon even arrived in the city.

Several areas in Mumbai’s western suburbs, from Bandra to Andheri, received pre-monsoon showers for a few hours late Thursday night. While there should have been little or no remnants of it in the morning, that is far from what actually transpired.

Even after several hours, many areas around railway stations, busy roads etc remained flooded in the morning. Interestingly, not all of them fell under BMC’s list of 66 flooding prone spots in the city. The only plus side was the respite from the scorching heat.

But, since hell hath no fury like netizens facing a waterlogged road on their way to work in the morning, many of them took to social media to highlight the civic body’s incompetence.

The following are some posts that offer a glimpse into what might be in store for the city in a few days.

Monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 30, days ahead of its usual schedule, and is expected to arrive in Mumbai next week.
