Navi Mumbai police on Tuesday arrested a 21-year-old for slapping an on-duty constable, who asked him to follow traffic rules or face penalty, in Kopar Khairane.

The incident took place on Monday night when the accused, Danish Ibrahim Shaikh, parked his bike on a highway near Sector-28 and moved on to talk to one of his friends standing nearby.

When traffic constable Tanaji Patil arrived at the spot, he noticed that the two-wheeler was obstructing traffic on the road and asked Shaikh to remove it. The biker, however, refused to comply and started arguing with the 45-year-old constable.

When Patil told Shaikh that he will be fined for not removing his vehicle, the latter got furious and retaliated by slapping the constable.

The altercation came to an end after a few seconds when bystanders tried to intervene. Meanwhile, Patil informed the police control room and lodged the complaint against Shaikh, a resident of Navi Mumbai.

Kopar Khairane police station subsequently booked Shaikh under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.

He was arrested on Tuesday and produced in Vashi court, which granted him bail. Shaikh has reportedly claimed that the altercation started after Patil abused him.

The scuffle between Shaikh and Patil was recorded by a bystander and is now viral on social media.
