Four days after security was stepped up at Mumbai airport following the discovery of an ISIS threat note, the police have arrested an employee of a private agency for allegedly putting up the hand-written note.

On November 29, a private security guard found the note in one of the toilets of the sprawling ACC building, located around 3.5 km away from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Sahar Road. The note read – “attack the cargo on 26.01.18 or anytime – ISIS“.

Following the note’s discovery, Central Industrial Security Force, Mumbai police and bomb squads got into action and evacuated the entire cargo section. However, nothing suspicious was found.

On Sunday, police arrested 24-year-old Akshay Gaikar in connection with planting the note. The accused worked as a security supervisor of a private agency at the airport.

The accused, incidentally, knew that there were no CCTV cameras in the washroom, but was reportedly caught on tape while writing the note.

During interrogation, Gaikar confessed to playing the ‘prank’ after watching a video.

“Someone had circulated a video in their WhatsApp group of a similar incident that had taken place at the airport in 2015. After watching the clip, he thought of doing something similar,” Anil Kumbhare, Deputy Commissioner of Police, was quoted saying.

Gaikar has been booked under sections 506 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 505 (1,b) (intent to cause fear and alarm) of the Indian Penal Code.

He has been sent to 14 days judicial custody by a court.
