Central Railway raked in a record Rs 121 crore in fines from ticketless travellers and other offenders in the period from April to December 2017, the highest ever recovered during this period so far.

“The earnings realised during the period from April to December 2017 from ticketless/irregular travel was Rs 121.09 crore against Rs 100.53 crore during the corresponding period of last year (2016), showing an increase of 20.46%,” it said in a release in Mumbai.

In December 2017 alone, 2.06 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel and unbooked luggage were detected, against 1.81 lakh cases in December 2016. In all, 24.41 lakh cases were detected during April 2017 to December 2017, against 20.69 lakh cases during the corresponding period in 2016.

“We always try to ensure that ticketless travelling is curbed and this campaign is part of our efforts. We have also provided new avenues to book or get tickets including mobile phones and ticket-vending machines,” said CR’s chief commercial manager, Shailendra Kumar.
