Mumbai Police has arrested four persons for allegedly leaking the Chemistry question paper of the ongoing HSC board examinations from Bhoiwada in central Mumbai.

The incident came to light on February 28 after a student was caught by a teacher with an image of the Chemistry question paper on his mobile phone an hour before the exam at a junior college in Parel. He had also tried to forward it to another student.

Suspecting a leak, the chief exam conductor of the college filed a complaint with Bhoiwada police station.

The subsequent investigation brought to light the involvement of four more people, who are believed to be the source of the leak. All four were arrested last week. The student, however, has not been arrested.

The accused – Subodh Jha, Mahesh Gupta, Shilpa Tiwari and Mohammed Shaikh – were booked under the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board and other Specified Examinations Act, 1982, as well as the Information Technology Act.

They were produced before the Bhoiwada metropolitan magistrate on March 3, which remanded them in police custody till Thursday. The cops are still trying to ascertain the specific role each of them played in the leak.

Last year, at least six HSC papers were leaked. In each case, the students were found in possession of images of question papers minutes before the exams started.

In a bid to crackdown on such cases, the board introduced a number of measures like barring students from entering the exam hall late and sealing the question papers in bundles which could only be opened in the hall and in presence of at least two students.
