Two persons died and four others were injured after a fully loaded container rammed into a stationary luxury bus near Dahanu on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway on Tuesday morning.

The mishap took place around 7 am near Mahalaxmi temple in Charoti area when the bus developed a flat tyre, forcing the driver to bring the vehicle to a sudden halt in the main (first) lane. The bus was travelling from Gujarat to Mumbai.

The driver of the trailing container, believed to be speeding, was unable to stop his vehicle on time and ended up ramming it into the rear end of the stationary bus.

The container’s driver, Ramesh Bariya (45), and a bus passenger seated at the rear end of the bus, Madhuben Solanki (65), died on the spot while four others sustained injuries.

The incident took place barely three hours after 17 labourers were killed and 15 others injured after the truck they were travelling in overturned on the Pune-Satara highway in western Maharashtra’s Satara district.

The incident took place around 4:30 am, when the truck driver lost control over the wheels at an ‘S’ shaped road at Khambatki ghat near Khandala tunnel, causing it to go overturn and veer off from the road.
