Kherwadi police on Sunday arrested three bike-borne youths for abusing and assaulting an inspector and constable during a nakabandi near Bandra East on the Western Express Highway.

The accused were identified as Dinesh Ravindra Hankare (20), Ayan Mohammad Noor Kadari Shaikh (20) and Fardeen Mohammad Noor Kadari Shaikh (20) – all residents of Borivali.

According to reports, the incident took place during wee hours of Sunday when inspector Jagdev Kalapad (50) and others were conducting checks near Nandadeep Garden on the WEH.

The stretch is frequented by speeding bikers, who pose a serious risk to themselves and other motorists.

Around 3 am yesterday, Dinesh on his bike with Ayan as pillion and Fardeen on a scooter, approached the check post. According to cops, the duo were riding rashly and started hurling abuses at officials, before attempting to flee.

Dinesh managed to surpass the barriers and tried to make a run by riding in the wrong lane before he was intercepted by a mobile patrolling van.

After being stopped, Dinesh and Ayan got down from the bike and started abusing the cops. Seconds later, Fardeen got down from his two-wheeler and joined them.

The trio later manhandled inspector Kalapad and constable Vijay Vasant Auchare (35). The also tore Auchare’s name tag from his uniform and pinned him down on the road.

When reinforcements arrived and the accused were being taken into custody, one of them threatened to take revenge after being released from prison.

“Main Jaan Shaan ka ladka hoon (My father is Jaan Shaan). Aaj pakdoge bhi to kya karoge, ek din chhoot ke aaunga toh sab police walon ko wardi me hi maar dalunga (You can’t do anything by arresting me. I will return and will kill all policemen in their uniforms),” an official told Hindustan Times.

All three were subesequently booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506(2) (criminal intimidation), 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

They were produced before a local court which remanded them to judicial custody.

Ayan and Fardeen, twins, are second-year BMS students, while Dinesh is in the first year. According to officials, the trio would often drive rashly on the same road.

The incident comes barely two days after a 17-year-old lost his life after ramming his bike into another two-wheeler while attempting to evade cops at Bandra’s Reclamation. The underage rider, Akhil Gaus, was not wearing a helmet.
