At least three persons were injured after two heavy vehicles collided with each other on the busy Eastern Express Highway near Mulund early morning on Saturday.

The incident took place around 6 am when a dumper rammed into a clean-up vehicle from behind on the northbound lane of Airoli Bridge near Mulund. The clean-up vehicle had reportedly stopped in the first lane due to a tyre burst.

The mishap caused both vehicles to veer off on either side of the road. The civic body’s clean-up vehicle toppled near the divider while the dumper came to a halt at the edge of the flyover. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

Three people were injured in the mishap. Traffic officials reached the site a few minutes later and sent the injured persons to a nearby hospital. Later, a crane was called to remove the vehicles from the road.

The vehicles, however, could not be immediately cleared from the highway as the garbage in the dumper caught fire, prompting authorities to alert the fire department. One fire engine was deployed and the fire was brought under control.

The accident led to major traffic snarls on the Eastern Express Highway today morning as traffic police had to completely shut the northbound lane, towards Thane. A lane on the south-bound road also had to be temporarily closed.

Several motorists complained of long queues and delays following the mishap, despite heavy police presence. The lack of timely information about the accident only worsened the wait.

However, Mumbai Police later took to Twitter to share details about the reason for the delay.

The vehicles were in the process of being removed as of publishing this report.

Incidentally, it was the second mishap involving two heavy vehicles in the city today. In the other incident, a milk van rammed into a truck near Mankhurd on the northbound lane of the highway, affecting the movement of vehicles towards Navi Mumbai/Vashi.

The vehicles were towed away around 10 am, post which the traffic situation normalised.
