Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has received a slew of new passenger amenities like mobile charging point, child helpline and night help desk as a part of the Rs 43 crore revamp.

The charging point, installed at platform 8, supports 12 direct charging and eight USB charging points. Six more charging points will be installed at the station in the coming days.

In addition, four and five such charging points will come up at Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus respectively. The facility will later be extended to more stations on both Western and Central lines.

A childcare helpline ‘1098’ and a 24/7 help desk have also been inaugurated. The helpdesk will be the single point of contact for runaway or missing kids, who will be identified and reunited with their families.

With the plan for converting the UNESCO world heritage building into a museum on hold, railways will be spending the sanctioned amount on restoring the station’s original look.

The work involves removing wooden partitions and extensions among other work. The existing transport museum is also expected to be revived.

The transporter has already shifted some offices outside the building to accommodate the restoration work, which will be done without damaging the existing structure. A detailed presentation about the planned work was made earlier this week.

Apart from the revamp work, Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani also inaugurated a Self Ticketing Zone at the Star Chamber booking area from where passengers will be able to buy tickets via ATVM, CoTVM, and QR code.

To increase the adoption of UTS app, Central Railway has stationed trained staffers at the counter and tasked them with spreading awareness and educating commuters about the app.
