On Thursday, a part of a residential building collapsed in Mumbai’s Girgaon area.

The incident occurred around 9:30 pm on Thursday, when a part of Bhagirathi building in Girgaon gave in and collapsed on the approach road. The building is located near Fanaswadi, Babasaheb Jaykar Marg in Girgaon. The backside portion of the adjoining Vasudeo building also collapsed.

As of 10:15 pm, at least five fire tenders have arrived to the spot and disaster management cell has been alerted.

Rescue operations are currently underway for the two residents, one male and one female, who are believed to be trapped inside the debris.

Six others were rescued successfully. Neelam Jain, Dimple Jain, Neha Jain and Raju Jain were among those rescued.

A woman, identified as Bina Devi, sustained multiple injuries and is currently admitted to the state-run GT Hospital.

The first floor of the building was reportedly empty and the second floor was occupied by Jain and Sawa families. The building had already been served a notice by MHADA, whose officials had declared it unfit for habitation.

Just last week, the top floor of the three-storeyed building, Pathare House, in the same area had collapsed due to heavy rainfall. All three persons who were trapped inside the debris were rescued successfully.

In another incident, a building in Bhiwandi’s Gaibi Nagar area had collapsed on July 31, resulting in the death of eight residents.

Further details awaited.

Update (11:15 pm): 8 fire tenders on the spot, rescue operation still underway.
