Sion police arrest youth whose chain snatching act was caught on camera, gone viral
A 22-year-old, whose act of robbing an elderly lady was caught on camera and gone viral on the internet, was arrested by Sion police on Wednesday.
The accused, Javed Mohammad Shamshad Khan, had robbed a 73-year-old woman from Sion last month while she was on her way to the temple. The victim Chandraben Mehta is a resident of Parimal building, located within walking distance from the temple.
Khan followed Mehta while she was walking in a walled lane between two residential buildings. But before Mehta could reach the main road, Khan snatched the gold chain from her neck and fled from the scene. The chain was reportedly worth Rs 45,000.
Following the robbery, Mehta was rushed to the hospital and a complaint was filed with Sion police station.
The accused, however, did not realize that his act was caught on a CCTV camera attached to the adjacent building. The video soon leaked on the internet and had gone viral since then.
Owing the growing concern about the safety of senior citizens in the area, Sion police started investigating the case on priority and alerted their informers. With their help, the accused was identified as a Dharavi resident.
However, when officials reached his residence, they were informed that he had fled to Bhagalpur, Bihar. A team from Sion police station travelled to Bihar and arrested the accused while he was staying at his relative’s place.
During questioning, he confessed that he had received the video of his theft on WhatsApp, following which he decided to flee Mumbai.
He is currently in police custody.
