Naupada police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old for allegedly assaulting and threatening a traffic police official who was trying to tow his vehicle from Thane West.

The incident took place around 4:45 pm today at Damania Estate on Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg in Vishnu Nagar, Thane West.

According to an official, head traffic constable Kashinath More was on routine duty when he arrived in Damania Estate to tow vehicles parked in the ‘no parking’ zone.

When the towing staff towed the two-wheeler belonging to Pavan Panjwani, he got into an argument with the official.

“Panjwani started abusing the head constable since he refused to release his two-wheeler. The situation escalated when More got down from the van to confront Panjwani, who manhandled the official during their scuffle,” the official said.

A part of the incident was also caught on the camera attached to the towing van.

In the video, Panjwani can be seen trying to grab More from the collar. Towards the end of the footage, the bike owner also claims that the official laid a hand on him first, but the video does not show that.

“The bike owner abused the head constable after which he got down from the van to apprehend him. It is likely that Panjwani mistook his intention and retaliated by pushing him,” an eye-witness, on the condition of anonymity, told Local Press Co.

Following their altercation, More alerted the control room. In no time, a team from Naupada police arrived on the spot and arrested Panjwani.

He has been booked under section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and of the Indian Penal Code.

Attempts at reaching Panjwani for a statement have been in vain as of publishing this.
