Police detain protestors during candlelight vigil at Marine Drive
Mumbai Police detained several people who had gathered at Marine Drive on Monday night as part of a candlelight vigil to protest against clashes in northeast Delhi, which claimed the lives of four persons.
After officials barricaded the area near Gateway of India and Taj Hotel, people who had gathered to protest the violence in Delhi started to gather at Marine Drive.
“Somebody forwarded a message that gave a call for a protest regarding the Delhi violence. We have designated places for protest in Mumbai like Azad Maidan. Despite this people were going to the Gateway of India,” DCP Sangram Singh told reporters.

Around 100 protestors, who had gathered on the spot, were later dispersed by police. Meanwhile, those who refused to leave were taken away in police vans.
“When we stopped them they gathered at Marine Drive. It was causing inconvenience to locals. We talked to them and dispersed them peacefully. Some people have been detained,” he added.
At least eight protestors were detained and taken to either Azad Maidan or Marine Drive police station during the drive. However, no one was booked and all were allowed to go home after some time.
Four people including a head constable of Delhi Police lost their lives in the clashes that took place between pro-CAA and anti-CAA protesters at various places in the North-East District of Delhi.
