The Jungle Book becomes India’s highest grossing Hollywood film
John Favreau’s The Jungle Book, which released on April 8 in India, has now become the highest grossing Hollywood film of the country.
On Wednesday, Disney said that within the first 12 days of its India release, the film managed to gross $23.7 million (Rs 157 crore). The film has already surpassed the lifetime collections of Fast and Furious 7, which at ₹ 108 crores, held the record so far.
The Jungle Book also posted the biggest opening week collection for any Hollywood release in India by raking in $15.1 million. The movie beat Universal’s Furious 7 despite opening in 1,500 screens, compared to the former’s 2,800 screens.
Along with strong word of mouth publicity, The Jungle Book’s success can also be attributed to fact that it was dubbed into local languages like Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The non-English versions contributed to over half of its box office collection in India.
Based on Rudyard Kipling’s novel of the same name, The Jungle Book features Neel Sethi as Mowgli.
