A 29-year-old man, who was aboard a Churchgate-bound fast train on Sunday, was left bleeding profusely after a stone hurled from near the tracks struck him on his head.

The victim identified as Taj Mohammad, is a resident of Bhayandar and was on his way to Mumbai Central. The incident took place between Jogeshwari and Goregaon stations when he was standing near the footboard and got hit by the stone. Fellow commuters pulled the chain to help Mohammad get immediate medical attention.

As soon as the Railway Protection Force (RPF) were informed, they swung into action and detained three people related to the attack. The accused identified as Abdul Sadam (20), Subhash Gaud (19) and Shafeeq (38) had been throwing stones at passing trains on a regular basis. They admitted to hurling the rock that injured Mohammad, a construction worker.

The trio were booked under relevant sections of the Railway Act.
