Couple commits suicide owing to parents’ opposition to their relationship

A 24-year-old youth and his 21-year-old girlfriend committed suicide owing to their parents’ opposition to their relationship.

While the man (identified as Venkatesh P) jumped in front of a running train in Vasai, a few hours after his girlfriend (identified as Prema Devendra) hung herself from the ceiling fan of her residence in Antop Hill.

According to the girl’s relatives, the couple took the extreme step on Sunday after Venkatesh was denied permission by his parents to marry Prema. “Prema pleaded that the family reconsider their decision and allow them to tie the knot but Venkatesh’s sister not only refused to budge, she also humiliated Prema,” a relative told the police.

Around noon, Prema hung herself, and her brother rushed her to the hospital but she was declared dead on arrival.
