At least four persons died and two others were injured after the car they were travelling in rammed into a gas tanker on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway early morning on Friday.

According to officials, the incident took place around 4:45 am near Rasayani, close to the Khalapur toll plaza, when the car was heading towards Mumbai. The diver of the car allegedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the HP gas tanker in front of it.

Three female passengers, all of the same family, and the car’s driver died in the mishap. The car’s remaining two occupants sustained serious injuries.

The injured passengers were rushed to MGM Hospital in Panvel, Navi Mumbai by highway police and Delta Force personnel, a special unit deployed on the expressway to help the local police in checking crimes and curbing accidents.

The bodies were shifted to a state-run hospital for post-mortem. Meanwhile, an accidental death report has been registered by the Raisoni police station.

The victims were returning to Mumbai after attending a wedding in the Satara district of Maharashtra.

The incident comes barely three weeks after five persons were killed and 30 others injured when a private passenger bus fell into a gorge near Khandala.
