Director of ‘Gadgets Guru’ portal arrested for non-payment of Service Tax, GST to tune of Rs 8 crore
The Director of the online shopping portal Gadgets Guru, Rajpal Singh, has been arrested on charges of non-payment of service tax and Goods & Service Tax (GST).
According to ANI, the firm has a total tax liability is of over Rs 8 crore, which is still unpaid.
“Rajpal Singh, Director of an online shopping website Gadgets Guru, arrested for non-payment of Service Tax & GST, officials say the total liability is over Rs 8 crores,” ANI reported.

Sources say the firm failed to pay the requisite amount to authorities despite repeated follow-ups and notices. The arrest by made by Navi Mumbai GST Commissionerate.
Gadgets Guru’s is India’s first technology and information e-commerce site, it’s website says. The brand is a part of the Oracle Telesystems, which was founded in 1997 by Arun Kapur. The company also owns other brands like OTS and Phone Warehouse.
The firm is headquartered in Mumbai, with business offices in Chennai and Pune. It sells a variety of electronic gadgets on its website, ranging from mobile phones to car accessories.
Back in 2016, the Finance Ministry increased the monetary limit for arresting Service Tax evaders to Rs 2 crore.
The power to arrest in Service Tax law is proposed to be restricted only to situations where the taxpayer has collected the tax but not deposited it with the exchequer, and amount of such tax collected but not paid is above the threshold of Rs 2 crore.
