Some residents had to be rescued from their homes following the collapse of the staircase portion of Pooja building, located on 17th Road near Khar Gymkhana

A part of a residential building in Mumbai’s Khar area collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.

According to preliminary information, a portion of ground plus five-storey Pooja building collapsed around 1 pm today. The building is located on 17th Road near Khar Gymkhana in Khar West.

A few residents were trapped in the building following the collapse of the section, which primarily comprised of the building’s staircase.

Within minutes, officials from the local police and fire brigade arrived at the spot to aid with rescue efforts and a few residents were safely brought down from the building. An ambulance was also dispatched to the spot.

No one has been reported injured as of publishing this report. The building, meanwhile, has been evacuated.

Some repair work was being undertaken in the building when the portion collapsed, sources said. However, the exact reason for the collapse is not yet known.

Further details are awaited.


Update (7:45 pm):

A 10-year-old girl, identified as Mahi Dinesh Motwani, has died in the mishap. She was doing her homework when the affected portion collapsed.

She was rescued a few hours after the incident and rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Two other people have also been injured and are currently being treated for various injuries.

NDRF, fire brigade and other agencies are still conducting searches to ensure no one is still trapped in the debris. At least 20 others have been safely rescued.


The incident comes barely four days after a portion of a four-storey Ahmed Building, located on Lokmanya Tilak Marg opposite Police Commissioner’s Office, collapsed in Mumbai’s Fort area.
