MMRDA is set to roll out a Rs 1,000 crore road project to ensure the city’s most flourishing commercial hub, Bandra Kurla Complex, is not bogged down by traffic snarls in the coming months.

While talking to Financial Express, MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan confirmed that three elevated roads and two flyovers connecting BKC to different parts of the city will be built under the road project.

The projects include an elevated road from Dharavi to the Bandra Worli Sea Link, two elevated roads that will decongest traffic on the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and two dual lane flyovers connecting the commercial hub with the Bandra-Worli sealink.

The first elevated road, decongesting SCLR, will start at Vakola flyover near the Western Express Highway and end before the flyover on SCLR. The second will start at MTNL junction in BKC and end near the LBS flyover at Kurla.

MMRDA expects the traffic density to increase four-fold by late 2018 in anticipation of multiple upcoming projects including the city’s first drive-in theatre, the country’s largest convention centre and the underground station for the bullet train to Ahmedabad.

The work on the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) is also expected to start from the last quarter of 2017.

Meanwhile, the seven million sq.ft convention centre, being built by Reliance Group, is expected to start hosting events from mid-2018. It will include a shopping complex, state-of-the-art theatre and a range of hotels.

Since the land in BKC can also be partially used for entertainment and residential purposes, a slew of residential projects. restaurants, pubs and other projects are expected to come up in the next 12-18 months.
