Several trains running on the Mumbai-Pune route will either be cancelled, short-terminated or diverted for a fortnight from July 26 to August 9 as Central Railway tries to address the problem of falling boulders and landslides.

During the 15-day mega block, CR will take up massive restoration work to resolve the problem of toppling boulders and minor landslides near Bhor Ghat on the treacherous Lonavala-Khandala section.

“The services get badly disrupted due to this problem mainly in the South-East Ghats from mid-June, affecting mobility and safety of the trains negotiating this section. The CR’s Mumbai Division has undertaken various infrastructure works to prevent this,” a CR official was quoted as saying.

While the work is underway, several trains will be cancelled, short-terminated or diverted over the next fortnight. The change will affect thousands of passengers, including those who travel daily and tourists.

In the last few weeks alone, at least half a dozen incidents of falling boulders and minor landslides have been reported on the Mumbai-Pune sector. While no major tragedy has taken place, the incidents have caused major delays.

Deccan Express, Pragati Express, CSMT Mumbai-Gadag Express, Pune-Panvel passenger train are among the major trains that will be cancelled during the period between July 26 to August 9.

As many as 10 trains including the Kolhapur-Mumbai Koyna Express, Mumbai-Kolhapur Sahyadri Express will be operated only upto Pune, and will be cancelled between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharashtra Terminus-Pune sector.

The Hubbali-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express (Mumbai) will be run only upto Pune and return journey will commence from Pune to Hubbali.

The Hazur Sahib Nanded-Panvel Express shall be run till Pune and remain cancelled between Pune-Panvel and the return journey will commence from Pune.

The curtailment of services is expected to increase congestion on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Pune Highway, which are also prone to landslides and traffic snarls.
